w/c 3rd February 2020

In English this week we have been on an adventure! The children put on their spacesuits, helmets, boots and gloves, strapped themselves into our rocket and blasted off into space! We saw planets, stars, aliens and space junk!

Then we learned about how to write a diary about our journey. We thought about using the date, writing using “I” and writing in the past tense.

In Maths we have been learning about large numbers. We have been counting in 10’s and using this knowledge to split numbers into 10’s and 1’s. For example; 25 is 20 and 5, which is 2 groups of 10 and 5 ones. We have then been thinking about using the signs <, >, and = to compare large amounts. We will be continuing this next week.

In topic this week we have been focussing on materials and their properties. We have been using words such as waterproof, shiny, holey, bendy to describe different materials. We then watched a clip of Christina Koch, the astronaut, coming down from the ISS in her capsule. We looked at the parachute used to help her return to earth safely and talked about what materials made the best parachutes. The children investigated using different materials to make parachutes and tried them out.

As we will be testing the children on reading their tricky words before half term your child may not be heard read this week. They can still change their books if they read them at home.

Parent/teaching meetings take place this week. If you haven’t signed up or can’t make the dates or times available please speak to the class teacher to arrange a convenient time.
