Principal Roles

Sampson — Sampson is the livelier, funny man to Gregory who is smarter, slower to anger and tolerates his companion’s attempts at humour. Ensemble singer, dancer and sword fighting (will be part of the ensemble)

Gregory — coming soon

Abraham — An intimidating presence. Ensemble singer, dancer and sword fighting (will be part of the ensemble)

Balthasar — smaller male, fighter but younger or same age as Romeo. Boyish but trying to be one of the lads, a little scared of what this leads him to at times, sensitive. Ensemble singer, dancer, sword fighting and emotional range. (Will be part of the ensemble)

Benvolio — sensible one of the group who is Romeo’s friend and sometimes mentor, credible fighter. Ensemble singer, dancer, sword fighting and emotional range.

Tybalt — good looking capable, cruel and must be believed to be capable of spiteful violence. Passionate role with no softness. Sword fighting and emotional range as he has a death scene. Gender neutral role. (Will be part of the ensemble)

Capulet — an older man. Powerful actor, quick to anger and violence. (Will be part of the ensemble)

Lady Capulet — Mrs C ranges between cold anger as well as strong anger. Powerful character with large emotional range, prepared to kill for her daughter, or disown her if she lets the family down. (Will be part of the ensemble)

Montague — an older man. A caring father (Will be part of the ensemble)

Lady Montague — Mrs M needs to do a lot of weepy stuff (Will be part of the ensemble)

Prince — older but not as old as Capulet and Montague, regal looking. Gender neutral role. Strong and powerful vocal actor. (Will be part of the ensemble.

Romeo — needs to be able to handle lines, fight, needs to have a good acting range. Sword fighting is required. Should be able to play cocky, but also self-pitting, prepared to play a romantic part with kissing.

Paris — regal looking, credible fighter, gentle at times. He is the good looking, cocky, privileged young man about town. Sword fighting, emotional range as he has a death scene. Prepared to play a romantic part with kissing. (Will be part of the ensemble)

Nurse — needs to be secure with lines and confident. Will need to be able to pull off the comedy, and later on in the play, the intense drama of this role. (Will be part of the ensemble)

Juliet — needs to be confident with lines and again have a good acting range. Prepared to be lifted, big emotional range. Prepared to play a romantic part with kissing.

Mercutio — clownish alpha male, must be charismatic, able to fight, crack jokes and generally show off, big confidence, cocky part, and sword fighting. (Will be part of the ensemble)

Friar Laurence — Big acting role with lots of lines, might be looking for someone who is able to rap, although for the right actor this would not be imperative. An optimist and an idealist, one who hopes for the best. Romeo’s friend and mentor.

Rosaline — Romeo’s former beautiful muse, dancer (will be part of the ensemble)
