Our School Curriculum

At Burnham Market Primary School, we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum during the Reception year and the National Curriculum in Years 1 to 6. We pride ourselves on having a broad, balanced and stimulating curriculum. At the heart of what we do is our vision of ‘Local Memories, Broadening Horizons’, making links between home, school, our local community and the wider world, providing our children with exciting and stimulating experiences that will foster a love of learning and develop enquiring minds.

Our ‘Discovery Learning’ lessons cover a broad range of subject areas and are built around a framework of skills and knowledge with clear outcomes.  They build on prior learning, allowing children to know more and remember more.  We have our own woodland on site which means children have the fantastic opportunity to apply their skills and knowledge in a welcoming outdoor learning environment, learn outdoor skills such as fire lighting and also have the chance to explore and use their imaginations.

We have a strong values led curriculum at Burnham Market Primary School focusing on the 6 core values of respect, independence, aspiration, teamwork, pride and resilience.  Our core values are used as a focus in our assemblies and are celebrated in our Celebration Assembly each week and in our displays around the school, as well as being woven into teaching and learning within classrooms. The children also learn explicitly about these values. We also teach children how to understand their emotions and self-regulate, supporting all steps of their development.  Through our focus on emotional resilience and key values we aim to make our children ready for the next step in their education.

In Reception we follow an integrated approach led by high quality fiction and non-fiction texts. We are lucky enough to have a large learning environment and a generous outdoor space.  As we learn new things our outdoor space is enhanced with open-ended resources which follow our own interests as well as being connected to our learning. The children choose which activities they would like to use in their independent learning and are also asked to come to adult-led small groups and circle times and take on adult initiated challenges throughout the day to extend their learning. Planning in the Early Years Foundation Stage is topic based and takes into account the children’s interests. We also provide children with experiences outside of the classroom through educational visits and visitors to school, making links with our local area and broadening children’s horizons.

Below is our Curriculum Intent, Implementation and Impact: the land below the windmill represents the strategic aims of The Wensum Trust. Our school vision is at the centre of the windmill and is at the heart of all that we do. The sails of the windmill show how we implement the curriculum and our values. The impact of our curriculum can be seen around the windmill. See our detailed curriculum plans for the whole school, EYFS, KS1, Lower KS2 and Upper KS2 below.
