"Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything"  - Plato

Music at Alderman Peel High School is for every student. APHS Music education provides a fun environment for self-expression and encourages creative thinking and teamwork while rewarding students for hard work. We strive to nurture talent in all of our students and encourage the development of musical skills and knowledge through our well-structured curriculum and extracurricular music provision. There is an extensive range of individual music lessons available, as well as all students receiving 2 hours per fortnight of classroom music lessons.

KS3 Curriculum

The curriculum is based upon the principle of Discover, Develop & Apply, where skills and knowledge are developed and refined, and then revisited throughout the key stage through a variety of curriculum areas. The central language of music lessons is ‘music’. Every student sings, plays, composes, and performs regularly to help build confidence, gain new experiences, and realise that they can accomplish anything that they put their mind to. Popular, Western Orchestral and World music are embedded into the curriculum through four areas of development; Musicianship skills, Performing, Composing, and Theory and Appraising. The KS3 curriculum prepares all students for a lifelong appreciation of music and an opportunity to study further at KS4.

KS4 Curriculum

Students are engaged in music making from the very beginning of the course, developing listening, performing, and compositional skills to support their progress and learning. The Performing and Composing element of the course is internally assessed, with a final listening and appraising examination being taken at the end of the course.

  • Unit 1: Performing - 30%
  • Unit 2: Composing – 30%
  • Unit 3: Listening and Appraising – 40%
