Design & Technology

Design and Technology is taught from Year 7 through to Year 11. Design and Technology allows pupils to explore their creativity using a range of materials and techniques. Pupils have the opportunity to design and make products that respond to a wide variety of problems within a range of contexts. Design and Technology specifically develops pupils' design skills as well as their practical skills, focusing particularly on problem solving and evaluation skills.

Design and Technology is taught in well-equipped workshops and ICT classrooms with a range of facilities available. Staff have a wide range of skills and experience.

 

Design & Technology at Key Stage 4

Design and Technology is a practical subject which requires the application of knowledge, skill and understanding when developing ideas, planning, producing products and evaluating them. Skills include designing, making, using processes and joining techniques. Students work with materials such as metal, timber, plastic, composites, smart materials and applying finishing processes, as well as using computer aided designing (CAD) and manufacture (CAM). The course is aimed at students who specifically like to make high quality products using a number of materials.

The Pearson Edexcel Level 1/Level 2 GCSE (9–1) in Design and Technology consists of one externally-examined paper and one non-examined assessment component. Each component is worth 50% of the total marks.
