Konnichiwa - Hello from Japan!

Big Talk

This week look at the picture below and talk about the following:

Where could this building be? How do you know?

Who could live here? What makes you think that?

Would you like to stay here? why?

Each morning when the shutters open what is the first thing that you might hear?

Geography

This week is International week and we have been learning about Japan. First of all we thought about the UK and discovered that it is in Europe. We listened to a song about the continents to help us learn them. You can listen too, just click on the link below.

Which continent is Japan in?

We talked lots about the things in Japan that were the same and different to the UK. For example, our money is called pounds and in Japan they use yen.

Can you remember any other similarities and differences?

We will also be comparing the tallest mountain in the uk - Ben Nevis with the tallest mountain in Japan - Mount Fuji.

Art

We have learnt about the famous artist Yayoi Kusama who created many pieces of artwork inspired by dots. Here's a little video to watch... https://edition.cnn.com/videos/arts/2019/03/21/yayoi-kusama-artist-dots-animation-lon-orig.cnn All the children used cotton reels, corks, cotton buds, paint brushes and their fingers! to create their own artwork inspired by dots.

P.E.

In P.E. this week we have learned about traditional playground games from both the UK and Japan. We found that some of these were very similar to games we play today although some of the names have changed. We enjoyed playing "rock, paper, scissors" (Jansen) and "cops and robbers" (Oni).

HISTORY

We have been talking about different traditions and celebrations and one which is celebrated in Japan called Children's Day. We made fish shaped biscuits and deassigned and created our family Koinoboro.

ENGLISH

We listened to the story The Peach Boy (a traditional Japanese story) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHBsAQmdzKE and created a story plate to help us to retell the story https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfXFW79dhLI

We have had a lovely week learning all about a new place in a different part of the world.
