At Hellesdon High School, we are lucky enough to be able to offer a wide range of Design and Technology based subjects. Our workshops, food, textile and design rooms are fully equipped with specialist machinery and computer software which enable students to progress onto design based degree courses, specialist trade based courses and to further their interest in the hospitality and catering industry.
Design Technology - Education and experience
The Design Technology team are a committed department of designers, craftspeople, food specialists and engineers. Between us we have many years of experience emanating from a range of backgrounds but our collective vision is to help inspire and create students who have the qualities needed for the future world of work. Students whose skills will address the needs of the future: environmental concerns, use of sustainable materials and whose resilience will enable them to solve problems and to succeed in whichever career they choose.
At Key Stage 3 we cover Graphic Design, Food Technology, Design and Technology and Textiles on our termly carousel. All students experience these areas through projects that are driven by the design process and culminate in a final product.
Students can progress to studying each of these areas discreetly at Key stage 4 through qualifications such as GCSE, Technical Awards and BTEC. We also offer Construction, delivered in our purpose-built workshop which prepares students for further study in areas such as: carpentry, bricklaying and site management. Engineering is also introduced at key stage 4.
Students can pursue A-level Graphic Communication and Engineering in Years 12 and 13 at Hellesdon Sixth Form. These courses prepare students for further study at degree level, and many of our students go on to university in related subjects.
Key Stage 4 - NCFE level 2 Technical Award in Graphic Design.
This course teaches students how to use the core design components of: colour,
composition, image, typography, line and tone to design and create their own graphic outcomes in response to a range of briefs using Adobe Software. Students will learn about contemporary and historical design professionals and working in the industry. They will have the opportunity to learn about and to specialise in the following areas of graphic design: illustration, digital art/design, advertising graphics, typography, branding and packaging graphics. The course is structure is:
50% - Portfolio of evidence based on four units of work completed over the duration of the course.
50% - External assessment, task based exam assessing application of knowledge and skills.
This course is equivalent to GCSE grades 9 - 4 and students will be awarded a Pass / Merit / Distinction / Distinction*. This course will lead on to the study of other Graphic Design and communication based courses.
Key Stage 5 - A LEVEL Graphic Communication: AQA
A level Graphic Communication encompasses many design disciplines and students can choose to work in the following areas: Advertising, packaging design, design for print, Illustration, branding, typography and digital art/design. This course provides students with opportunities to develop their understanding of the design process and the skills needed to produce high quality graphic outcomes. The course is divided into three areas:
Introductory projects: Students will respond to a number of short project briefs designed to help them develop their design process and communication of ideas. Students are encouraged to practice drawing, use of hand materials and photography to help them produce digital outcomes using Adobe software.
Assessed Personal Investigation Project: Students choose a personal theme to explore and produce a range of outcomes. This project is assessed and is worth 60% of the final grade. As part of this project students will write a 2000-3000 word essay that focuses on the work of designers and artists related to their theme.
Externally set assignment: Students will be provided with examination papers in February of Year 13. They will select one of eight questions to be used as a starting point for a body of Preparatory work. They will then spend 15 hours of supervised, unaided time to produce a finished outcome or a series of related finished outcomes, informed by their preparatory work. This assignment is worth 40% of the final grade.
