‘Geography is the subject which holds the key to our future’
Geography is about the study of places, the human and physical processes which shape them and the people who live in them. It helps students to make sense of their surroundings and to gain a better understanding of the variety of physical and human conditions on the earth’s surface. We aim to develop students' interest in their surroundings and in the variety of human and physical environments on the earth. Our curriculum will build a sense of wonder at the beauty of the world and help students appreciate different environments, enhancing their sense of responsibility to work towards a sustainable future for our planet.
Geography prepares young people with locational knowledge and geographical skills and understanding to make sense of the world in which they live. Geography enables an understanding of the past, present and the future and helps us understand the global challenges we face. This is explored through a range of topics that vary from local settlements to global issues such as climate change.
Geography is a study of the real world, students at Acle look for explanations about how the real world works and think about alternative sustainable futures that they may face. In this process, our students develop skills that are transferrable across the curriculum and throughout life. Our curriculum ensures that students develop empathy towards others and perceive their place in the world.
Our geographers develop an interest in their surroundings and the human & physical geographical conditions on the earth. They gain a sense of wonder of the world around them through understanding processes, places and analysing and interpreting data. Human and physical geography are interlinked throughout the curriculum to bring greater breadth and depth to the course.
The best classroom for geography is outside, so the promotion of fieldwork or using the outside classroom is important at Acle. The curriculum is enhanced through field visits to the coast and to London and with visiting guest speakers.
Geography equips students with a wide range of transferrable skills that are valued by employers, colleges and universities.
