Hellesdon Sixth Form

Year 13 Sizewell B Trip

On Wednesday 11 October 10 Hellesdon Sixth Form students joined a Norfolk Higher Aspiration Scheme (HAS) trip to Sizewell B nuclear power station.

Following a trip in a luxury coach from Marriott’s Chariots we arrived at Sizewell. After a safety briefing and being kitted out in hard hat, Hi-Viz vest, safety glasses and handing in our mobile phones (!) we commenced the tour…

Our tour guide Debbie was incredibly knowledgeable about the physics, chemistry and environmental science around Britain’s only Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR) power station. The tour lasted nearly 3 hours and took us on a 1.7-mile walk, but went incredibly quickly. Of the many highlights the massive generator hall where the floor vibrated (very nice on some tired feet!) and a visit from the resident onsite seal (yes, the animal) were up there with the strange knowledge that you were standing less than 100 metres from nuclear fission going on!!

My thanks to Phyllis from the HAS scheme for organising the whole day and the students who asked some great questions during the day.
