Supporting Early Language Development
Research from Speech and Language UK (formerly I CAN) shows that at least 1.7 million children in the UK are behind in talking and understanding words, with speech, language, and communication needs rising steadily—from 18.8% in 2015 to 22.5% in 2021.
Both the EYFS statutory framework (DfE 2021) and The Reading Framework (DfE 2021) highlight the importance of developing early speech, language, and communication skills. These are essential for academic success and social development, as spoken language is the key way children learn, express themselves, and make sense of the world.
The Early Language Programme, fully funded by the DfE, is free for schools. Over six sessions across the year, participants will gain practical strategies to support language development in Early Years and KS1, equipping staff to improve outcomes for all children.
Programme Aims
• Understand a working model of language and typical development stages (ages 4–11)
• Develop practical classroom skills for quality-first teaching in Early Years and KS1
• Identify children who may be struggling and provide targeted support
• Embed effective approaches to improve language outcomes for all pupils

Course Overview
Module 1 – What is Language and How it Develops?
Foundations of language development and key stages from Early Years onwards.
Module 2 – Supporting Talk in Schools
Strategies to embed talk and communication across the school day.
Module 3 – Teaching Words and Making Them Stick
Techniques for effective vocabulary teaching and retention.
Module 4 – Identifying and Supporting SLCN
Tools to recognise and support children with speech, language, and communication needs.
Module 5 – Making Change: Sustaining Progress
Embed new practices and maintain improvements over time.
Module 6 – Sharing the School Improvement Journey
Reflect on progress, celebrate impact, and plan next steps for whole-school language development.
Participants must attend all six sessions and complete gap tasks between modules to embed learning and maximise impact.
