English and Reading

As part of our English, we will be exploring the award-winning picture-book, The Mysteries of Harris Burdick (by Chris Van Allsburg).
"His disappearance is not the only mystery left behind. What were the stories that went with these drawings? There are some clues..."

Who is Harris Burdick? Where did he disappear to? And how was he going to finish his stories?

Chris Van Allsburg presents a series of loosely related drawings, each accompanied by a title and a caption which the reader may use to make up his or her own story.

As part of the book, the children will be challenged by asking themselves to write a private investigator report.

Maths

The children are continuing their maths learning journey, focusing on division, multiplication, fractions, decimals and percentages. They will also develop their 4-operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division), using maths mastery to break down the problems pictorially, as well as using formal methods of calculation. We will also be developing their fluency and arithmetic skills regularly, using a combination of short e-learning and shorter sessions in the afternoons.

This is an important year for Year 6, and so we will be spending a great deal of time reinforcing and consolidating prior learning, as well as moving forward with greater mathematical challenges as we head towards our SATs in May.

Discovery Learning

In our Discovery Learning unit this term, Kittiwakes will be exploring Artemis 2  space flight as part of our Georgraphy and science unit study unit and looking at Slavery Beyond 1066 as part of our history unit.

We’ll be exploring how slavery impacted our country and the wider world, looking at the consequences and impact slavery had on the people of the time and still has an impact today.

Additionally, we'll also be exploring the awesome exploration of the far side of the moon seen in the last few weeks, as we explore the images, stories and reports from the far side of the moon and what it means for future space exploration.

Science

In our Science studies this term, we’ll be exploring Living Things and their Environments – linked to Artemis 2 and the future colonisation of the Moon

Following the successful space flight to the far side of the moon and now the future plans to land on the moon and then build a sustainable lunar base by 2030, the children will explore how building a base on the moon might be possible and what would be needed to create a safe and sustainable environment for humans and other living things on the moon itself.

Throughout the unit, children will be challenged to work scientifically, planning and carrying out investigations, exploring questions, and researching with a clear purpose. They will develop their understanding of how light works, looking at how it bounces off different surfaces and how it changes through time, distance and how it can impact as it travels through different materials.

Religious Education (R.E)

Our Big Question for this term is:

@What does the resurrection mean to Christians?@

To explore this, children will take part in a series of creative, philosophical and discussion-based lessons. We will:

Much of our learning and discussion will be guided by the Norfolk Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education and the Diocese of Norwich’s recommendations.

Physical and Social Education (P.S.E)

This term, our PSE and Philosophy for Children focus will be My rights and responsibilities.

These sessions will encourage thoughtful discussion, critical thinking, and emotional awareness, helping children to understand themselves and others more deeply about their relationships with each other and the wider world. Much of the learning will focus on group discussions and teamwork based activities.

Art and Design Technology (D.T.)

In Art and Design this term, children will be exploring printing.

As part of the project, we'll be looking at different forms of printing and montage themed art, using different mediums and styles of artistic interpretation.

Music

As part of our music unit, the children will be exploring 'Sea Shanties'. Using their chorus and rhythm keeping skills, the children will explore and develop their melody skills, whilst decoding and analysing further examples of sea shanties.

Computing

In our Computing unit this term, the children will be exploring data gathering and information technology

As part of the unit, the class will design Google Forms to collect information and Google Sheets to compile, sort and analyse the data. much of the learning will be based on the Google Classroom.

Modern Foreign Languages (M.F.L.)

We will continue our weekly Spanish lessons this term, focusing on greetings and key conversational phrases to support the children’s growing understanding of the language.

Our learning will be:

  • Conversation-based, with children encouraged to speak Spanish as much as possible.

  • Recorded in their Spanish notebooks, allowing them to track and reflect on their progress.

  • Supported by practice around the school, including memorising Spanish nouns, verbs, and sentence structures.

  • Enhanced through guidance from El Señor Williams (Mr Williams) and the use of online learning apps such as Duolingo.

Children will be encouraged to actively practise their Spanish in class and beyond, building confidence and fluency in everyday communication.

This term in P.E., the children will be focusing on Tag Rugby and OAA (Outdoor Adventurous Activities).

  • Cricket: Children will develop core skills around cricket, learning to catch, throw and bat in a coordinated way.

  • Athletics: A range of activities, based on movement and flexibility

Timetable:

  • Wednesday mornings – P.E. led by Mrs Morrell

  • Friday mornings – P.E. led by Mr Williams

Children should continue to wear appropriate clothing for outdoor activity and be prepared for all weathers.

Woodland

As the seasons change, it’s a wonderful opportunity for children to explore nature in a safe and educational way. Our woodland sessions will not only develop a love of the outdoors but will also be linked to English and science-based learning.

Important details:

  • Outdoor learning will take place on Thursdays.

  • Children should come dressed in long sleeves and trousers.

  • Please provide a change of footwear; wellies are recommended from October onwards.

These sessions will encourage curiosity, teamwork, and hands-on learning in a natural environment.

Class Dojo

Class Dojo is our main form of communication with parents. If you have not yet signed up for Class Dojo and would like to, please do not hesitate to come and see us.  We are more than happy to help if you are having difficulty accessing this.  It's a great space where you can view photos, videos and information about all the amazing things that are happening in our classroom and around the school. It gives you the chance to see what your children have been learning in school each week, giving you the opportunity to talk to them at home about what they have been doing.

We also use the Kittiwakes Google Classroom for our digital learning in school.

Home Learning

There will be a few home learning tasks to complete each week. These include: weekly spellings (set on a Monday), Local History Study tasks and SAT revision (only for Year 6).

The Local area-themed home learning opportunities involve a range of skills that can be completed at home.

Year 6 children are also expected to complete the following work each week as part of their home learning to support them in their journey towards SATs:

1. One test from their Maths SATs Practice Book

2. One test from their English SATs Practice Book

3. One test from their GPS SATs Practise Book

4. Practise and learn their individual spellings

Latest Media Project

“S.I. Superficial Intelligence” isn’t just a short film—it’s a passion project that has brought out the best in the class and empowered the next generation of storytellers.
What started as a lighthearted joke about a glitchy smartboard behaving like a terrible "A.I." quickly evolved into a full-fledged sci-fi adventure, driven by the students’ boundless creativity and enthusiasm.
As the class teacher at Burnham Market Primary, I had the privilege of guiding my students through every step of the filmmaking process—from concept to final cut. We explored the use of professional film equipment, and I supported them as they brought their vision to life. From camerawork and sound production to robotic puppetry, the S.I. film project has shown the children that filmmaking isn’t just for Hollywood—it’s for anyone with a vision and a story to tell.
Seeing my students take their first steps into the world of film has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. I’m incredibly proud to have helped bring “S.I. Superficial Intelligence” to life and to have inspired a love of storytelling in the next generation.
