Children at Wells Nursery and Primary School will be able to play outside come rain or shine thanks to the generosity of a local business celebrating its 100th anniversary.
French’s is an award-winning family run Fish and Chip Shop in the heart of the town which is marking 100 years of business this year.
When Alanna French heard that Wells Nursery and Primary School were trying to raise funds for a new canopy in the nursery school’s outdoor play area, she reached out to the rest of her family to see if they could help.
The shop had considered giving away fish and chips in its 100th anniversary week, but instead decided to donate the full £10,000 needed to fund the project.
Alanna said: “My family has a strong connection to Wells Nursery and Primary School. All three generations of our family attended the school and now a fourth generation has started with my son at the nursery. My great grandfather also helped build the school so it means a lot to us to be able to make this donation as the children in Wells will benefit, along with the whole town.”

Rachel Stroulger, Headteacher at Wells Primary and Nursery School, said: “We cannot thank French’s enough for this incredibly generous donation. As a business they share our strong sense of community and how we all contribute to the future of our children.
“This new canopy will be an essential part of the exciting new changes we have planned for our Early Years outdoor learning provision, and will make such a difference to the quality of Early Years education we will be able to offer to the children of Wells. We are hoping it will be ready at the start of the summer term and we will be inviting the French family to join us for the celebrations.”
