Squirrels Class Walk

In Reception, we have been focusing on Geography as part of the 'Understanding the World' strand of EYFS. We have been exploring maps, creating our own maps, and learning about our local area.

Then, on a sunny Wednesday afternoon, we went on our own walk of our local area!
We looked at a map first, created a checklist of things we might spot, and began our adventure. Squirrels class loved looking out for key features including traffic lights, shops and bus stops. We took photos, ticked off each item from our list as we saw them, and practiced using our focus vocabulary like map, local, Norwich, and Heather Avenue Infant School.
Possibly the highlight of the trip was meeting a member of our local community - a barber - who came out to say hello and even gave each child a lolly pop to take home!
This Friday, we are going to make some cross-curricular links by talking about how we stayed safe on our walk, before sending home a high-vis jacket with each child to keep. We hope to see lots of our children staying safe as the winter months and darker days approach by staying visible on their walks.
