World Book Day 2026 - James Campbell Author Visit

An author visit at Heather Avenue Infant School on Wednesday 4th March turned into a lovely highlight of the school’s World Book Day celebrations, thanks to the wonderfully energetic James Campbell. The children were instantly captivated by his love of stories, poems, and wonderfully wild ideas.
A Morning Full of Laughter and Imagination
James opened with his hilarious poem about the toothless tiger. He followed it with a brilliantly silly story about a cat and a family stuck in an umbrella tree - a tale the children helped bring to life with enthusiastic participation.
He shared his golden rule for young writers: “If you want to be a writer, you can start now!”
Every child then joined him in reciting a spontaneous writers’ oath, which quickly became a favourite moment of the morning.
Behind the Scenes of a Writer
James showed the children his own notebook, filled with scribbles, sketches, and half‑formed ideas. He explained how he often draws characters before writing about them, helping the children see how stories grow from imagination to page. He also shared some of his published books, including a peek at his book about pets and his much loved umbrella tree story, written an incredible 32 years ago.
Families can explore more of James Campbell’s work, including fun videos to watch at home or in class, on his website: www.jamescampbellauthor.com.
