We began the week by finishing reading the Nadia Shireen story Yeti and the Bird. We looked at how the Yeti character had changed from the beginning to the end and why focusing on using the conjunctions but and because.

Next we recapped the key events in the story and sequenced these to help us retell the story.

Later in the week we will be looking at opposites and creating our own characters.

Maths

Year 1

This week in year 1 we have been using our knowledge of tens to begin to investigate tens and ones. AT the beginning of the week we found lots of pots of objects that needed counting. Mrs Morgan made so many mistakes counting them in 1s so we decided to try putting the objects into lines of 10. We used a sorting frame to help us. Once we got really confident at this we learned about Dienes (ten sticks and ones). We have used these to make numbers and to think about how to write 10s and 1s.

Here are some examples for you to try at home.

What numbers have been made?

Year 2

This week we started the week by learning how to subtract a 2 digit number from another 2 digit number crossing ones. Below is an example…

44 - 26 = 18

Here we draw out 44.

Then we take away 2 tens from the 4 tens.

We can’t take away 6 ones from 4 ones so we exchange a ten for 10 ones.

Now we can take away the 6 ones.

To find the answer we count the tens and ones which are left.

Most of us found drawing out tens and one the most efficient method and a few of us used equations.

Here we take away the tens and then take away the ones.

Then we recapped the different coins. We labelled, played games and counted coins in pence.

We also looked at different ways to make the same amount. For example 23p can be made with...

20p+2p+1p

10p+10p+1p+1p+1p

5p+5p+10p+2p+1p

History Project - Magnificent Monarchs

In our history project we created a timeline of 6 magnificent monarchs. We then learnt about the wise and courageous Alfred the Great and explored the Bayeux tapestry and William the Conqueror.
