Phonics
Year 1
This week the year 1 children have taken part in a mid year phonics check. This is similar to the test they will do in June and covers all of the sounds through reading a range of made up and real words. They all did a great job and we are really happy with their progress so far.
We have also been recapping the “igh” sound in words. This weeks spellings are:
high
sigh
thigh
sight
brighter
flight
frightening
went
any
many
Year 2
This week we have been recapping on the digraphs which make the sound /or/ - or, al, or and aw. Here are this week’s spellings…
twig
from
torch
walk
jaw
north
straw
saucepan
ninety
hundred
We have also been working on expanding sentences by adding adjectives to describe nouns, adverbs to describe verbs and more details.
For example-
The cat jumped.
The fluffy, black cat jumped quickly when it saw a dog coming.
The girl skipped.
The tall, blonde girl skipped happily along the path on her way to the park.
Why not have a go at expanding this sentence at home…
The dragon flew.
English
This week we have continued to explore the text The Dragon Machine by Helen Ward. We added adjectives and more detail about our own dragon machines we designed last week and thought of interesting verbs to describe how our machines move.
At the end of the week we will be thinking about how the main character, George, has changed throughout the story.
Maths
Year 1
This week in year 1 we are continuing to learn about time. We have been learning about clocks. We know the names of the long - minute hand and short - hour hand. We have made “o clock” times and “half past” times using real clocks and also drawn the dans on clocks to show the times.
Year 2
This week is all about time. We have made clocks, been revising o’clock and half past, learning how to tell his time to quarter to and past and also five minute intervals.
At home please….
- keep talking about the time and your daily routine
- count around the clock in 5 minute intervals
- talk about the position of the hands (minute and hour) and what this means
Science Project - Plant Survival
This week we have started a new science project called Plant Survival (please find the knowledge organiser attached to the bottom of this blog). This week we have been naming the different parts of plants, planting seeds to observe growth over the next few weeks, looking at signs of growth around school and making predictions about where grass grows the best.
