Inspiring Engineers of the Future

On 10th June, fifty Year 9 students from Alderman Peel High School took part in a Wind Turbine Challenge Day delivered by Nabih A. from The Smallpeice Trust as part of #GreatBigGreenWeek.

Working in teams, students were challenged to design, build and test their own wind turbine designs to power an LED bulb, producing some incredibly innovative solutions. They also pitched their renewable energy companies and marketing materials to the rest of the group, developing valuable communication and presentation skills alongside their engineering knowledge.
One aspect I particularly loved was the focus on sustainability. Teams had to carefully track the resources they used, with prizes awarded for the most cost-effective and sustainable designs, encouraging students to think like real engineers.
A huge thank you to Nabih A. and The Smallpeice Trust for delivering such an engaging and inspiring day, and to the Dudgeon Wind Farm Community Fund via Norfolk Community Foundation for funding this fantastic opportunity and helping us inspire the next generation of engineers, designers and problem-solvers.

Special thanks must also go to Sophie Skipp from Equinor, who not only spent the entire day supporting the workshop and engaging with our students, but also joined me for an interview with Kayleigh Poacher on BBC Radio Norfolk to discuss the importance of #STEM education, industry partnerships and the opportunities available within the renewable energy sector.
The interview was prompted by a fantastic article by Fran Abrams, who visited our STEM Club the previous week to learn more about the exciting opportunities available to our students:

The enthusiasm, creativity and teamwork shown by our students throughout the day was fantastic to see, and it was a brilliant example of how industry partnerships can bring learning to life.
Thank you to everyone involved in making the day such a success! 🀩 πŸ‘ πŸ’‘
