Marsh Mallow - Year 4

Staff: Miss Beard, Mrs Irvine and Mrs Reed

Welcome to another exciting term in Year 4! Our classroom is a happy, caring place where everyone belongs, feels valued, and is encouraged to take PRIDE in everything they do—Perseverance, Respect, Independence, Doing our best, and Encouraging others. This term, our learning will take us on some fascinating adventures. In science, we will become dental detectives as we learn about the different types of teeth, what they do, and how healthy and unhealthy habits affect them. We’ll carry out fun investigations to see how different drinks can impact teeth and practise using super scientific vocabulary to explain what we discover. In history, we will travel back in time to learn about the Anglo-Saxons—why they came to Britain after the Romans left, where they settled, and what life was like in their villages. We’ll explore powerful kingdoms such as Wessex, Mercia, and Northumbria, and discover how they still influence Britain today through place names and language. In geography, our woodland learning will help us explore villages—what makes them special, how they are different from towns and cities, and why they are often built near rivers, fertile land, or useful resources. Throughout the term, we will learn, laugh, and grow together, showing PRIDE in our work, our behaviour, and our school community.

English

This term in English, Year 4 will set off on an exciting adventure through the story Arthur and the Golden Rope by Joe Todd-Stanton. This action-packed tale will inspire us to write with imagination, detail, and confidence as we explore how authors bring brave characters and magical worlds to life. We will develop our storytelling skills by creating rich, expanded noun phrases using adjectives, nouns, and prepositions, and by adding fronted adverbials to make our sentences flow and sparkle. Along the way, we will build on our grammar knowledge by learning the difference between plural and possessive -s, including how to show possession using apostrophes with plural nouns. We will practise using a wider range of conjunctions—such as when, if, because, although, before, and while—to join ideas and explain our thinking clearly. As our writing grows, we will learn how to organise ideas into paragraphs, choose nouns and pronouns carefully to avoid repetition, and use commas after fronted adverbials with increasing accuracy. It promises to be a heroic and creative term, full of bold writing, exciting sentences, and a real sense of achievement in our English work.

Maths

This term in Maths, Year 4 will be learning through exploration, play, and hands-on discovery, using a wide range of manipulatives to help us see, touch, and understand mathematical ideas. We will strengthen our skills in the four operations, confidently adding and subtracting numbers up to four digits and multiplying and dividing up to four digits by one- and two-digit numbers, using both mental strategies and formal written methods. Through rich problem-solving, including multi-step word problems, we will test ideas, make conjectures, and explain our thinking in ways that are convincing to others.

As we explore fractions, we will use practical resources to recognise, find, and write fractions of shapes, quantities, and sets of objects, as well as compare and order fractions with the same denominator and spot equivalent fractions. In statistics, we will collect, present, and interpret data using bar charts, pictograms, and tables, carefully classifying information and comparing results to answer questions. Our geometry learning will involve building and investigating 2D and 3D shapes, characterising their properties, and describing position, direction, and movement—including using coordinates in the first quadrant.

Throughout all areas of maths, we will develop fluency in our times tables up to 12 × 12, using them to solve problems efficiently and check our work. We will be encouraged to critique and improve our methods, generalise patterns we notice, and explain our reasoning clearly using mathematical vocabulary. With plenty of practical equipment, discussion, and playful challenge, this term promises to build confidence, curiosity, and a real love of maths

Outdoor Learning

Marsh Mallow class will love learning in our woodland area, where lessons will feel like an adventure! Surrounded by trees and nature, the children will explore what makes a village special and how it is different from a town or a city. They will use maps, symbols and keys to locate villages and identify physical features, such as rivers and hills, as well as human features like houses and roads. Through fun discussions and outdoor activities, they will learn why villages are often built in certain places, such as near rivers for water, on fertile land for farming, or close to natural resources. Learning outside will help bring geography to life and make discovering the world exciting and memorable.

P.E

In PE, Year 4 will enjoy developing their skills in both gymnastics and netball. In gymnastics, they will use a variety of body shapes to make their sequences more interesting and effective, perform inverted movements safely by understanding that these happen when their hips go above their head, and work carefully with a partner to create balanced positions with control. They will learn how to use body tension to keep strong shapes during different rolls and practise landing their jumps safely by landing on their toes, looking forward, and bending their knees. In netball, they will develop control when sending and receiving the ball by cushioning it as they catch, learn how to protect the ball while moving to keep possession, and move into space to support their team. They will practise deciding when to pass and when to shoot, use simple attacking and defending tactics, and follow the rules so they can play and manage games fairly and confidently.

Class Dojo

Class Dojo will continue to be used this year. It is a great space where you can view photos, videos and information about what is happening in Year 4 and across the school. If you require another invitation to join, please don’t hesitate to ask.
