Summer Term in Oysters Class! 🌊🐟
Welcome to the final term of the school year for our wonderful Year 3 students! This Summer Term, our learning is built around the exciting theme of "Rivers," keeping perfectly in line with our school vision: "Anchored in the community; a place to belong, a world to explore."
Below is your parent's guide to the engaging, active, and creative adventures we have planned for the Oysters Class over the coming weeks...
Maths
🔢 Maths: Building Confident Mathematicians
This term, we are consolidating core skills and diving into some incredibly practical, real-world maths topics:
-
Addition & Subtraction Mastery: The children will solve tricky missing-number problems, choose the best mental or written strategies for large numbers, and learn how to use "difference in value" to crack subtraction puzzles.
-
Mass & Capacity: A highly hands-on unit where the children will learn to measure, compare, add, and subtract weights (grams and kilograms) and volumes (millilitres and litres).
-
Fractions: We will explore fractions of amounts, learn to spot equivalent fractions, and practice adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator.
English
📚 English: Journeys & Mysteries
Our reading and writing projects will take the children on an atmospheric journey into the deep woods, using the beautiful book 'Into the Forest' by Anthony Browne.
-
The Writing Project: The children will practice grouping their ideas into paragraphs and learning to punctuate spoken dialogue using speech marks. They will expand their language by choosing between "a" or "an" correctly, using a variety of joining words (like when, if, because, although), and playing with adverbs and prepositions to show exactly when, where, or why things are happening.
-
The Big Outcome: Applying all these amazing skills, the children will write their very own thrilling narrative based on a character getting lost!
Discovery Learning
🌍 Geography & Science: Explored Through Rivers
-
Go with the Flow (Geography): Our young explorers will learn all about the water cycle and the incredible journey of a river. They will study map keys, learn to read four-figure grid references, and conduct real geographical fieldwork!
-
Plants & Growth (Science): Tying into our river theme, the children will become botanists! They will investigate exactly what plants need to survive, how water travels through a plant, and explore the lifecycle of flowering plants, including pollination, seed formation, and seed dispersal.
🏰 Art: Carving Out History
Inspired by our local environment and history, the children will study the majestic structure of castles. They will use their sketching skills to plan and design their own ideas, before learning to sculpt and carve 3D castle reliefs using clay or soap bars!
🧠 PSHE & R.E.: Fairness & Equality
-
PSHE (Money & Community): We will explore the concepts of "fairness" and "equality." The children will look at how resources are distributed globally, discuss how poverty can affect lives, and think about ways we can actively make a positive difference in the world.
-
Religious Education: The class will be discussing why the Bible is such an important and sacred text for Christians, exploring its stories and how it guides people in their daily lives.
💻 Computing, Spanish & PE
-
Computing (Events & Actions): The children will dive into block-based coding (like Scratch)! They will learn how to program actions that trigger when a user presses a key, clicks a mouse, or touches the screen, creating their very own interactive, event-driven programs.
-
Spanish (Los Animales 🐶): We are exploring the animal kingdom! The children will learn to recognize, read, and pronounce animal names in Spanish. They will practice describing their favorite pets and using simple adjectives (like colors and sizes) to talk about them.
-
PE (Athletics & Cricket): On the sports field, the children will sharpen their sprinting forms for relay races, practice running and jumping techniques for distance, and master the "pull throw." They will also dive into cricket, learning to strike a bowled ball after a bounce, practice two-handed pick-ups, and build consistent catching skills.
🗓️ Sensational Trips & Fieldwork
True to our goal of exploring the world around us, we have some fantastic outdoor learning experiences lined up:
-
An immersive geography Fieldwork Visit to Baconsthorpe to study local rivers!
-
An exciting history trip to Norwich Castle to bring our castle themes and art to life!
We are so proud of how much the Oysters have grown this year, and we can't wait to share this final, unforgettable summer term with them! Thank you for your wonderful, ongoing support. ☀️🛶
