Barnacles Class - Spring Term 1: A Term of Discovery, Creativity & Big Ideas

This half term, Year 6 will be diving into an exciting journey of discovery, exploration and creativity – all anchored in our community and inspired by the wider world around us. Our core value this term is Pride: pride in our learning, our ideas, and the positive difference we can make.

Maths and English

➗ Maths

Mastering Measures & Decimals

Maths lessons will focus on real-world skills as children convert between metric and imperial units, measure accurately and build confidence with decimals. They’ll round, add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals – and, most importantly, explain their thinking and solve problems with confidence.

📖 English

Adventures, Evolution & Powerful Writing

Children will be transported into a thrilling scientific adventure through our class novel Darwin’s Dragons by Lindsay Galvin. As they read, they’ll sharpen their fluency, explore rich vocabulary and dig deep into the text to infer, summarise and debate big ideas.

Inspired by the story, pupils will:

  •  Write their own story of an exciting discovery
  •  Create an explanation text about how an animal has adapted to survive

Alongside this, children will continue to grow as confident spellers, exploring word origins, tricky homophones and spelling patterns that will support them as they move towards secondary school.

Discovery Learning

Discovery Learning:

🔬 Science

Evolution, Fossils & Survival

Our science topic, Evolution and Inheritance, links beautifully with our reading. Children will:

  • Investigate fossils and what they tell us about the past
  •  Explore inherited and environmental characteristics
  • Learn how Charles Darwin used evidence (like finch beaks!) to explain adaptation

The term will culminate in pupils researching and presenting an animal that has evolved over time

🧠 PSHE

Media, Influence & Staying Safe

Through thoughtful discussion, pupils will explore:

  • How media can influence opinions and emotions
  • How media can influence opinions and emotions

🌍 Geography –

Climate Change & Caring for Our World

Year 6 will become climate champions, learning about global biomes, climate zones and how climate change is affecting our planet – and our local rivers and marshes here in Norfolk.

A highlight of the term will be a visit from Norfolk Wildlife Trust, helping children understand real-life impacts and solutions. Pupils will then use their learning to write and perform a persuasive speech, encouraging the local community to take action.

🎶 Music

New Year in Song

Children will sing “A New Year Carol”, exploring the music of Britten and discovering how composers use harmony, dynamics and mood. They’ll also become composers themselves, creating and performing their own New Year carol.

Spanish

Discovering Spain

¡Vamos a España! Pupils will explore Spain’s geography, cities and neighbouring countries, practise listening and speaking skills, and create a bright, informative poster about Spain.

💻 Computing

Designing for the Web

Children will plan, design and create a webpage for the school website, learning how to combine text, images and links while thinking carefully about layout, purpose and usability.

 Art

Identity Through Self-Portraits

Inspired by the powerful artwork of Frida Kahlo, children will explore self-expression, symbolism and emotion. They’ll experiment with colour, composition and proportion to create a striking self-portrait that tells their own story.

  1. Plant-Based Food – plan and cook a nutritious plant-based dish, learning about healthy eating and sustainability.

General Notices

Reading for Pleasure

We like to nurture a strong ethos of reading for pleasure in the class and encourage regular reading both in and out of school.

We also have a WAW (Wise about Words) story time each day.  This may be sharing our class novel or a shorter book from the class collection.

As part of our ongoing drama work with the WAW project, we will be incorporating drama games and techniques to our learning across the curriculum.

Reading is an essential part of every child’s education.  We promote reading for pleasure throughout the whole school and encourage the children to read every day.  In Year 6, staff members have made a collection of some of their favourite children’s fiction which is available to borrow from the class bookshelves. The children have diary-style planners to keep themselves organised and which are used as reading records for home reading.  We also have a ‘library card’ system where children keep a record of the books they have borrowed. The children also have a space within class where they can write recommendations and comments about the books they have read.  We expect the children to read regularly at home and to use their Reading Log as a place to reflect on their reading.  Reading for pleasure has been proven to benefit children’s mental health and wellbeing and is an indicator for success in later life.  We notice in class that children who read more have a wider vocabulary and more ideas for writing as well as being more fluent readers, which really helps with their learning across the curriculum.

An example of some (but not all) of the books we have recommended in the past can be found in the ‘100 book challenge’.

🏑 PE

Strength, Skill & Teamwork

In PE, children will:

  • Develop strength and control in gymnastics, ending with a group routine
  • Apply skills and tactics in netball, finishing the unit by playing a match

Outdoor Learning

Woodland sessions will take place on Wednesdays. During these sessions, we will be completing Outdoor adventurous activity. Children will complete orienteering activities, using maps to follow a route. They will also be set a range of problem-solving activities that require teamwork and adapting to change.

Class Dojo

Class Dojo will continue to be used this term. It is a great space where you can view photos, videos and information about what is happening in Year 6 and across the school. If you require another invitation, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Home Learning

We expect the children to read every day and to fill in their reading logs from time to time, documenting and reflecting on their reading.
Children will have homework books for Maths, English and Spelling/Grammar. They will be set a weekly task to complete from each book which will then be reviewed in class together. All children have access to TT Rockstars for regular times table practise at
home. Their log-in details are stuck in their Homework logs.
