Castles and Numbers

Welcome Back!

It has been lovely to see the children back in school this week and we have enjoyed hearing all about their Christmas break.

Our topic for this term is "Off with their heads!" We will be learning all about castles, Kings and Queens. There may even be Knights and Dragons! We will be listening to stories, investigating and making shields, designing our own coat of arms, learning about the different people who live in a castle and the jobs they do and also learning about the lives of King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth II.

English/Topic

For our English work this week we have been learning about castles. We spent lots of time looking at different pictures of castles and deciding what was the same about them and what was different. We have learnt the words for some of the features of a castle - Drawbridge, Portcullis, Moat, Tower, Battlements, Turrets, Arrow slits. We have used our phonics knowledge to write these words and to make a list of them.

Maths

In maths this week we have been making sure we can recognise and read numbers to 10, 20, 50 and 100. We have been finding 1 more than and 1 less than the number using cubes, numicon, number lines and 100 squares. We have also worked out the answers in our head if we could.   The Year 2 children have been thinking about tens and ones and have been adding 10 more and taking 10 away from numbers. We have been investigating and talking about what patterns we see with the numbers if we add any tens number (10, 20, 30, 40, 50 etc)
