Castles and Car races!

English/Topic

This week in English we have continued to learn fact about castles. We learnt about the key features of Norwich castle and Carrickfergus castle. We  found them on Google maps and made our own 3D maps. We labelled pictures of them and then wrote sentences to give more information. The year 2 children tried to include extra details in their sentences to explain why things were there. For example instead of writing “The castle has 22 cannon holes.” They wrote, “The castle has 22 canon holes to help the people defend it from sea attacks.”

We have been really focussing on how to write our letters correctly and their placement on the line. Remember a, c, e, m, n, o, r, s, u, v, w, x, and z are all smaller letters that sit on the line. The capital letters  and b, d, h, k, l and t are tall letters that sit on the line. Finally f, g, j, p, q and y all have tails that go below the line.

Maths

In maths this week we have been learning about pairs of numbers that total 10 and 20. Once we could recall the pairs that totalled 10 really quickly we looked at the patterns of numbers and how that helped us with totals to 20.

0+10                                                                                                      0+20

1+9                                                                                                         1+19

2+8                                                                                                         2+18

3+7                                                                                                         3+17

4+6                                                                                                         4+16

5+5                                                                                                         5+15

6+4                                                                                                         6+14

7+3                                                                                                         7+13

8+2                                                                                                         8+12

9+1                                                                                                         9+11

10+0                                                                                                      10+10

The Year 2 children continued this pattern and investigated the remaining pairs.

We also learned about ordinal numbers and had lots of fun racing cars and giving our friends instructions to build towers!

If you wish to practise at home this is a song to help.

Racing cars also helps and is great fun. It is really important to focus on saying each number correctly.

Big Talk

Take a look at the picture below and talk about…

  • What adjectives can you think of to describe the dragon?
  • What verbs could you use to say what the dragon is doing?
  • What the dragon is being fed?
  • How do you think the children and dragon are feeling?
