Underwater adventures, subtraction and measuring

Big Talk

This week for your Big Talk we would like you to talk about instructions. Can you follow a set of instructions? Can you give someone else a set of instructions to follow?

Below is a set of instructions. Can you think about what these instructions might be for? Discuss with your adults how you could make them better.

Pour a some into the glass.

Fill the glass with cold water.

Enjoy.

English

We began the week with John Burningham's story Mr Gumpy's Outing. Mr Gumpy wants to enjoy a trip out on his boat on a sunny day but is soon joined by an array of guests who kick, trample, squabble and flap causing the boat to tip. We all fell into the water and have spent the week thinking about what we might see, up-levelling Mrs Ellis's boring sentences and thinking about the different problems we might encounter. Next week the children will be writing their very own story set underwater.

Can you make Mrs Ellis's boring sentence more interesting for a team point?

I climbed out of the water.

Maths

We started off the week with subtraction and how to take away two 2-digit numbers when we have to cross 10. Below is how we have been solving subtraction using a tens and ones frame. Some children have found this method easier using an empty number line.

Then we moved on to recapping what we know about length and how to measure accurately with a ruler in centimetres. The children have been comparing lengths, measuring objects in cm and m and measuring parts of their body.

Topic

For our topic this week we will be learning how to make a clay pinch pot and using natural objects to print a pattern into it. We will also be writing instructions on how to make a pinch pot.
