Writing underwater adventures, capacity and The Queen's Jubilee

Big Talk

This week we would like you to talk about your favourite books. Talk about why you enjoy them, who you'd like to share them with. You could research other books by the same author.

Mrs Ellis loves reading books set and based in World War II. I often read a whole collection of books by the same author and one of my favourite authors is Jodi Picoult. The first book I read by her was House Rules. My favourite childhood author is Hans Christian Andersen and my favourite tale of his is The Little Mermaid.

Phonics

This week we are learning about 'ti' spelling which makes a sh sound. We know this is often followed with 'on'. Here are this week's spellings...

must

stuck

nation

station

relation

action

fiction

dictionary

minute

second

English

Last week we went on an underwater adventure after reading John Burningham's Mr Gumpy's Outing. This week the children will be creating a story map for their own story and then writing it out in their purple books. The children are becoming really confident writers, and we are challenging them to apply as many skills as they can, for example, a range of punctuation (commas to list, apostrophes for contractions and possession, question marks and full stops), correct spelling (using word lists and dictionaries) and ambitious vocabulary (similes, expanded noun phrases, alliteration and repetition).

Maths

This week in Maths is all about capacity. The children will be doing lots of practical maths with water to find out the capacity of different containers. They will also have a go at reading scales and measuring accurately. At home you could investigate different bottles and see what capacity they hold. You could also have a go at measuring accurately using a measuring jug. Here is a great game you can play online...https://www.transum.org/Maths/Activity/Reading_Scales/

We will also be recapping lots of previous learning. Don't forget to download the free WhiteRose 1 minute maths app. It's a great way to practice maths daily.

Queen's Platinum Jubilee

This week we are celebrating Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee. Each day will be recapping on what we've previously learnt about Queen Elizabeth and doing lots of different craft activities. Our week will end with everyone wearing red, white and blue, decorations and a street party themed picnic lunch!

Don't forget...

This Thursday is the FOGG disco. Children can bring their party clothes to school to change into. Please note the disco finishes at 5pm and pick up is through the main school gate. Children will be in their usual classroom.

On Friday we are celebrating the Queen's Platinum Jubilee with a picnic. Please remember to send your child with a home packed lunch if you didn't order a school picnic lunch.

School finishes for the half-term break 3pm this Friday, and we are back to school Monday 6th June (the Junior school starts back Tuesday 7th).

We hope you all enjoy a lovely break and we look forward to seeing you for our final half term!
