Letters to Santa and Assessments

English

This week we have be practising writing tricky words - go, love, have, we, me, she, be, the and also practising writing all the sounds we can hear in words. We have learned that it is very important to speak clearly or else the word doesn't make sense when we write it!

We then used what we learned to write our own letters to Father Christmas. We though about the features of a letter and remembered to ask him some questions and use "?"

Maths

This week we have been doing our first set of assessments in Year 1. We are very proud of how well the children tackled them. We have also been recapping addition and subtraction and thinking about how they fit together. For example - 3+7=10 and 7+3=10.

Topic

In our topic this week we have been learning all about British birds. We looked at pictures and videos to see what different birds look like and learned about what they like to eat. We talked about how food is harder to find in winter and then made our own bird feeders to hang in the garden at home. We also made one for Judy, our pen pal from Redmayne View Assisisted living, and sent it with our weekly letter. We hope Judy can put it up and watch birds come to feed too.

Big Talk

Look at the picture together and talk about;

  • What can you see happening in the picture?
  • What do you think the bird is looking for?
  • What do birds eat?
  • Do you think it is hungry? Why?
  • Do you think this bird will catch some food?
  • Why do you think it is a good predator?
