Finding the difference and Garrick Green leaflets

Maths

This week in maths we are finding the difference. We have been building towers to help us find the difference between two numbers. We will also be using pictures and then moving on to using bar models.

'What is the difference between 1 and 6?' we mean: 'How many numbers do you count up from 1 to get to 6?' or 'What is 6 subtract 1?'

In this photo we have 5 red cubes and 3 blue cubes. We know there are more red cubes than blue cubes and fewer blue cubes than red cubes.

To find the difference we count on from 3. The difference between 5 and 3 is 2. (We can also say 5 - 3 = 2).

We can also see this on a number line. If we find 3 and find 5. By counting up from 3 to 5 we can see the difference is 2.

We will be moving on to using pictures and drawing our own pictures to represent this.

English

In English the children have started to create their Garrick Green information leaflets. We are focusing on spellings, handwriting and beautiful presentation this week. The children are being really creative writing about what they love about Garrick Green!

Hats

As the weather is getting warmer we are encouraging the children to wear their hats outside at break and lunch times. However, unfortunately many of the hats we provide no longer fit so if you are able to send in a hat from home that would be great. If possible we would ask that the hat has a neck cover as well and is clearly named.

10 Challenge

As you may have seen we are trying to raise money to buy some new equipment for our Reception area. Many of the staff are completing a 10km walk, and we are encouraging the children to complete a challenge of their choice to raise some sponsorship.
