Week 3 Animals and addition & subtraction

English

In English this week we have been using adjectives and similes to write about different animals. We know that adjectives and describing words and similes is a comparison between two things using like or as. For example, The giraffe's next is as long as a snake. The eagle's wings are as wide as a bus. The fish is colourful like a rainbow. 

We use adjectives and similes in our writing to make it more interesting and to help create a better image for the reader. 

We have also been talking about the different ways the animals move and we will be using all of this to write some animal descriptions. 

 

Maths

In Maths this week we have been thinking about using our knowledge of number bonds to 10 to find the next multiple of 10. If we know that 7+3=10, this can help us with our number bonds to 20, 17+3=20. Using bead strings and 100 squares we have been using this knowledge to find the next multiple of 10.

For example - 36. The next multiple is 40. We know that 6 + 4 = 10. So we know that 36 + 4 = 40.

We have also been adding 10, 11, 20 and 2. We know on a 100 square that to add 10 we just need to 'jump down' to the number below so to add 11 we jump down and then count on 1. To add 20 we 'jump down' twice. To add 21 we 'jump down' twice and then add on another 1. Some children are able to do this mentally and others use concrete resources such as bead strings and 100 squares. There are 36 pigs in a field. The farmer adds 10 cows and then 10 goats. How many animals are there altogether in the field?

The farmer then takes out 11 pigs. How many animals are left?
