Infant School

Olive and Jade Class Blog week beginning 6.11.23

This week...

in Project we are reading the books 'My First Book of Garden Bugs' and going on a hunt around the school to explore which animals live where and the different habitats animals live in. 'Don't Put Your Finger in the Jelly, Nelly' and we are going to be exploring textures and use adjectives to describe what we can feel in the different objects. 'On Every Street in Every House' and we will explore what the children and their families like to do at home. We are also going on a virtual walk down church street using Google Earth and the children will explore the different building they can see.

In Phonics Reception are doing ng, v, oo/oo (look/moon), y and x. The Year 1s are doing the short vowels a, i, e, o and u and they will be revising the blue tricky words I, the, he, and she.

We are starting story scribing this week where the children tell the adult what they want to write and the adult scribes their stories for them and if the children can hear any of the sounds in the words they say then they take the pencil and write their sounds they can hear. Through story scribing we teach leaving finger spaces, using capital letters and full stops whilst also applying their phonic skills. They also get to act out the story in front of the class at the end of the day.

We will continue to hear all of the children read and it's brilliant so many of you are hearing your children read at home too as it is making a noticeable difference.

In Maths the children are learning about the number 4 and how it can be made up with 1 + 3, 3 + 1, 2 + 2, 4 + 0 and 0 + 4. We will also look at how if you change the arrangement of a set of objects, there are still the same amount of objects there, they are just in a different pattern. We have also recapped how lining things up to count them makes it easier to count and also more accurate.

There is a really good app - https://whiteroseeducation.com/1-minute-maths and the children can practise subitising (recognising an amount without counting) and they can use this app for other maths later on in the year.

In RE the children will be learning about belonging to a family and will talk about when new babies join a family. In RSHE we are talking about what makes us special and we are going to have a discussion about how we keep safe at school.

This week we are also starting DOTS which is mindfulness for children. In the first session we will do an activity that teaches the children to focus on what they can feel in their bodies. This will help the children develop self-regulation skills to help them when they are experiencing big feelings. The children will also have their weekly yoga session.

Have a good week!
