Weight, mass and "The Queen's Hat"

Big Talk

As we continue our learning about castles have a look at this castle picture and try to answer the questions below.

Frozen Castle Wallpapers - Wallpaper Cave

Where could this castle be?

How would you get to it?

Who do you think built it?

Who do you think might live here?

Would you like to live here? Why/Why not?

If you could build a castle anywhere, where would you choose?

Phonics

Our phonics work has been recapping the "qu" sound. We thought of as many "qu" words as we could and practised reading them. We have been listening for it in words and segmenting to spell them and also writing them in sentences. Our grammar work this week has been learning about Proper Nouns - Names of people and places. We have learned that these should always begin with a capital letter and have practised writing our name, our friends names and Mrs Morgan's name!

English

This week Miss Betts has been teaching our English lessons. We have been listening to the story, "The Queen's Hat." Here is the story on Youtube read by the author Steve Anthony.

First we sequenced the story thinking about the beginning, middle and end. We looked at large pictures and sorted them as a class to retell the story in the right order. Then we used smaller ones to do the same by ourselves. Once we knew the story really well we worked in groups to make "Freeze frames" that showed different parts of the story. It was great fun and we really enjoyed acting in front of our friends. Finally, this week, we have written sentences to go with our pictures. We focussed on capital letters, finger spaces and full stops and also on using conjunctions (joining words) to improve our sentences.

Maths

In maths this week we have been learning about weight and mass. We made ourselves into human balance scales using buckets and investigated the mass of different objects. We used the words "heavy, heavier, heaviest" and "light, lighter and lightest". We then used balance scales to compare 2 objects and then 3 objects. Once we got really confident we thought about how we could use cubes to find out the mass of an object. We practised putting an object into the balance scales and adding cubes 1 at a time until the scales were level or balanced again. Then we counted the cubes.

The year 2 children learned about measuring mass using grams and kilograms.

At the end of the week we out all our knowledge into practise by trying to solve different problems involving mass.

Topic

This week in Topic we have been learning about our queen, HRH Elizabeth II. We have learnt about the important events in her life and have put them into the correct chronological order by creating a timeline. We have though about the past and how her life has changed.
