Mr Gumpy, Measuring and clay pots.

English and Phonics

In Phonics this week we have been focussing on spotting and reading real and made up words. This means we have had to use all our blending and understanding skills to read and then make the choice about whether the word is real or not. Then we wrote the real words in sentences remembering to use capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.

Here are some for you to sort at home. Can you say or write sentences for the real words?

smart                   crown                          gright                       preemp

dreek                    treetop                      windy                       heating

In our English work this week we have been reading the story "Mr Gumpy's Outing" by John Burningham. In the story Mr Gumpy falls out of his boat and we acted this out and sank to the bottom of the water. We then swam under the water and had an adventure. We thought about what we saw and described what it looked like and felt like. We tried to use good adjectives and similes. We thought about the characters we met under the water and also got ourselves stick with a problem! Then we found a way to escape! The children really enjoyed acting and imagining our adventure and have written some fantastic descriptions of the setting and characters in their adventure.

Maths

In maths this week we have been learning about size, length and height. We have compared objects and used bigger than, smaller than, longer than, shorter than and taller than to compare them. We used cubes to measure objects and also learned about centimetres. We have been using rulers to measure lines in cm.

At home

Choose an object (something like a shoe, toy car, hairbrush). Then go on a hunt to find things that are longer than your object and shorted than your object.   Did you find anything that was the same length as your object?

Topic

Our topic work this week was investigating leaves and clay. We collected different leaves and looked closely at them. Then we learned how to make a clay pinch pot. We used the leaves and class tools to add leaf style decorations onto our pots.

Big Talk

The nation finding peace underwater - BBC Travel

Look at the picture above. Imagine you are swimming here.

Do you like it? How does it feel to be here?

What can you see around you?

What characters might you meet? What do they look like? Are they friendly?

If you swim further what might you find?

How will you get home?
