English

The year 1 children are starting the poem “The Magic Box” by Kit Wright. This week they have listened to and discussed the poem. Then they found some amazon objects in the classroom and investigated them, thinking about how they felt, what noises they might make, what they are made of, where they come from. The children focussed on describing the objects using alliteration and strong verbs.

The year 2 children have been busy practising for their show, doing lots of reading lines and drama.

Maths

Year 1

This week in maths the year 1 children have focussed on subtraction. They have been telling “not” stories, using part/whole models and bar models to find the missing numbers and writing subtraction equations. Then they thought about all the related facts they knew about a number.

Here is one to try at home.

Year 2

The year 2 children have been recapping all of the 4 operations - addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. They have been focussing on mastering number and explaining their reasoning about answers to questions. They have also been recapping fractions.

Project

We are continuing with our science project about plants this week. Now the children have been learning about leaves and looking closely to see how they are the same and how they are different. They have learned about why leaves are different shapes and also labelled the parts of a leaf.
