Garrick Green

Infant School

Week Beginning 3rd November

Welcome Back

We hope you all had a fabulous half term!

This week we are starting a new project called Once Upon a Time.  In project this week we will be having the story Little Red Riding Hood and then discussing characters. We will also encourage small world play and using the puppets to act out stories. We will hear the story Jack and the Beanstalk and learn about castles and kingdoms.

The daily stories we are having in class are all stories by the author Sue Hendra.  The children have been thinking about different kinds of emotions and linking this to how characters feel in the stories.

We have also started something new this week called Talk Through Stories where we listen to the same story every day and do different activities with that story. This is to help develop the children's vocabulary, understanding of how stories are structured, develop discussion and oracy skills and increase their enjoyment of listening to stories. This week's story is Hugless Douglas which they are really enjoying so far!

In Phonics the children have done z,w  and the digraphs oa, ie, ee/or (2 letters that make one sound. We are continuing to do squiggle to build up our motor skills.

We have started to do story scribes this week and this is where the children tell us a story and they write the sounds they can hear. They then get to act their story out at the end of the day with their friends.

In maths this week we are continuing to subitise (recognising an amount without counting) We have also been learning about more than and fewer than by looking at 2 groups of objects.

We are introducing how we talk about behaviour in school to the children and explaining about Flipping your lid. Next week we  will watch the cosmic kids episode on the guard dog and the wise owl as this explains the has and brain model to the children really effectively. You can see this here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNycQraNYhM

We will reintroduce the calm area in the classroom and explain that the children can go there if they need to have some time.

In RSHE we have been talking about how we are all good at different things and that we should be proud of our achievements. We  also discussed  how we should be happy for our friends who are good at different things.

The children are still practising writing their names.  We have put a name sheet in their book bag for them to continue practising at home.

We have noticed that lots of children are reading at home but their reading record books have not been written in.  Please write down when your child has read their Jolly Phonics book or practised recognising their sounds.

Have a good week.
