Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL)

At Firside Junior School, we are excited to be beginning our journey with the Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) programme. OPAL is built on a simple but powerful belief: that play is not just a break from learning — it is an essential part of it. High-quality, inclusive play opportunities support children’s physical health, emotional wellbeing, creativity and social development, helping them grow into confident, resilient individuals.

Through OPAL, we are rethinking how playtimes look and feel. Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach, we aim to create a rich, engaging outdoor environment where every child can find something meaningful to do. This might include imaginative play, den building, creative construction, quiet reflection, physical challenges or cooperative games. Children will be encouraged to take appropriate risks, solve problems, and develop independence in a safe and supportive setting.

The benefits of OPAL are far-reaching. Research shows that improved play opportunities can lead to happier children, increased physical activity, and stronger friendships. At Firside, we believe that when children are engaged and fulfilled during playtimes, they return to the classroom ready to learn, focus and succeed.

Our OPAL journey is closely linked to our school values of DREAM:

  • D – Determination: Children will be encouraged to try new things, persevere, and develop confidence through challenge and exploration.
  • R – Resilience: Through play, children learn to cope with challenges, manage risk, bounce back from setbacks and keep trying.
  • E – Enthusiasm: Play nurtures curiosity and energy, helping children approach both play and learning with excitement and positivity.
  • A – Ambition: Children are encouraged to aim high, set goals, and challenge themselves through new and adventurous play experiences.
  • M – Motivation: Engaging, meaningful play inspires curiosity and a love of learning.

As OPAL develops at Firside, you may start to notice changes in our outdoor spaces and what children bring to school. Loose parts such as tyres, crates, fabrics, guttering and other everyday materials may become part of our play offer, encouraging creativity and teamwork. Playtimes may look a little busier, a little muddier, and a lot more exciting!

We are looking forward to working with our whole school community as we develop this approach. If you would like to find out more about OPAL, please visit the official website: Outdoor Play and Learning Programme (OPAL).

Together, we are creating a school environment where every child can thrive, dream big, and love learning — both in and out of the classroom.
