Squirrels

Welcome to Squirrels Class!

Our Summer term topics are ‘Journeys’ and ‘Teddy Bears Picnic’

As we begin our Journeys topic, we will be learning about different types of vehicles and sharing our personal experiences of going on a journey. We will invent and create our own junk modelling vehicles. We will look at different types of journeys in our local environment and create maps of our journeys.

We will finish the half-term with our 'International Week' and this term will focus on learning about Peru. We will read the story ‘Up and Down the Andes’ to learn about children and places in Peru. We will find out about the similarities and differences between Peru and the UK, including schools, homes, weather, food, traditions and music, as well as exploring the famous Inca landmarks of Peru.

We will continue our ‘Journeys’ topic where we will discuss the journey of a letter. We will write a letter, walk to our local postbox and post it to our homes. We will discuss what makes different vehicles move, including a hot air balloon. We will look at the history of vehicles and compare them with vehicles today.

For the last two weeks of the summer term we will complete our transition topic ‘Teddy Bears Picnic’. During these two weeks we will get to know our new class teachers, talk about things to look forward to in Year 1 and reflect on things we have enjoyed in Reception. We will be cooking some treats ready to have our own Teddy Bears Picnic, with parents invited.

In our PE lessons this term we will be thinking about physical movement and continue to learn through gymnastics. We will also be exploring movement on equipment and learning how to use this safety. We will be thinking about outdoor games and have a go at practising an ‘outdoor game’ ready for Sports Day, as well as practising some ball skills and partner/team work.

Parents/carers will receive a topic web, which will show more detail of the learning activities that children will be covering. Please check Tapestry regularly to see what your child has been up to in class and leave a comment if you would like to. We would love to see photos, comments and entries from you too, to share what you have been up to at home. We look forward to the term ahead and sharing our learning with you! If you have any questions, queries or worries, please don’t hesitate to speak to a member of our staff team either in person at the class entrance, through Tapestry or via a phone call or email to the school office.

Your class teachers are Mrs Bailey and Ms Vargo. Your other class staff are Mrs Keeney, Mrs Felstead, Mrs Blyth (mornings), Miss Allen (afternoons) and Mrs Farmer (Monday-Wednesday).

COOKING

Our cooking day will usually be on a Monday, however we often cook in class and enjoy trying our food together on the carpet.  If we have food to send home, we will notify you by email beforehand, so you can send in a container if you would like to.

PE

We have PE every Tuesday and Thursday. We ask that your child wears their PE kit to school on these days. Please could earrings be removed, and longer hair tied back on PE days.  PE kit should include black shorts, a white t-shirt, plimsolls and black tracksuit bottoms or leggings.

Please also ensure that your child has spare clothing in their bags in case of any toilet accidents. These should be kept in school on your child’s coat peg.

Homework

Please read or share a book with your child at least three times a week and note this in their Reading Record.

Please support your child to complete the activities on Reading Eggs on a weekly basis.

Occasionally we may set simple topic-related challenges based on the children’s learning in class.  If so we will share these challenges with you via letter and on Tapestry.
