Welcome to Squirrels Class!
For the first half term, our topic is Space. We will be exploring and understanding the world through the history of astronauts, how the world works and where 'space' is. We will use a range of texts to learn more about space and stories about astronauts to encourage us to use our imagination. Our role play area will include props to explore outer space so that we can use our imagination and knowledge from stories to act out missions to Mars! Our Talk for Writing story will be The Way Back Home where we will use drama and actions to retell the story. Our stories will help us to write a range of texts, like writing letters to space and lists of what we would take with us.
After the half-term break we will have our International Week, which will be focusing on New York. We will be looking at similarities and differences between cultures, including schools, homes, animals, landscapes, food and music.
We will then move onto our second topic of Dinosaurs. We will be doing lots of finding out and research. We will be practising our technology skills to film our own stories about dinosaurs with puppets and focus on Harry and his Bucketful of Dinosaurs to retell with actions.
Throughout the term, we will be producing artwork on both a large and small scale, to display in our classroom.
We will be cooking in our kitchen classroom, making delicious recipes related to our topics, including rocket pizza, cheesy fossils and fruit salad. For our full cooking menu please refer to our Spring Term Topic Web, which is on display in the cloakroom in Squirrels Class and has been sent home via your child's book-bag.
Please click on the menu items below for more information...
Our cooking day will be Monday. Please ensure that your child has a named container with a lid every Monday so that they can take their tasty treats home! Please note that on some occasions, the children's cooking is eaten in class with the children as it may not be practical for them to bring their cooking home (e.g. toast).
In Reception, we make use of our outdoor spaces by offering opportunities for physical education throughout the week. Squirrels will begin PE lessons this term, every Tuesday and Thursday; please ensure they have a PE kit in school every day.
Please read with your child at least three times a week and record this in their reading record. Children should be encouraged to use their phonic knowledge to segment and blend words when reading new words for the first time.
Please also encourage your child to use Reading Eggs and Letterjoin to support their reading and writing skills. We would recommend this is done on a weekly basis.
Please speak to Miss Stan, Mrs Bennett, Miss Southgate or Mrs Blyth if you have any questions. We look forward to sharing our work with you throughout the Spring Term! Please remember to check Tapestry for updates on what your child has been doing. Please add your own observations onto Tapestry if your child has completed some learning with you at home which you would like to share.
