Heather Avenue

Infant School

Welcome to Badgers Class!

Our topics for the summer term are 'Journeys' and 'Teddy Bears Picnic'

In the first half of the summer term we will be learning all about journeys and transport. We will be exploring different ways of travelling including long distance journeys and walks in our local area, we will learn about different modes of transport and think about things we might see and hear on our journeys as well as learning about the Green Cross Code and how we keep safe while travelling. We will create and describe our own imaginary journeys inspired by high quality texts such as 'The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch' and 'The Train Ride'.

In the second half of the summer term we will be planning our very own teddy bears picnic! We will learn about different foods and try out some recipes as well as learning new sewing skills in order to design and create our own teddy bears ready for the picnic. We will explore texts such as 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt' and 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears'.

Reception Parents and carers will receive a topic web at the beginning of the term to share all the different activities we will be doing!

Later in the term we will have our International Week, which will be focusing on New Zealand. We will be looking at similarities and differences between cultures, including schools, homes, animals, landscapes, food and music as well as exploring the landmarks and history of New Zealand.

Please keep looking at Tapestry to see photos and examples of our learning. We would love it if you could add your own observations to Tapestry if your child has completed some learning with you at home which you would like to share. We look forward to sharing our work with you through the Summer Term!

We have PE every Tuesday and Thursday. We ask that your child wears their PE kit to school on these days. Please could earrings be removed and longer hair tied back on PE days.  PE kit should include black shorts, a white t-shirt, plimsolls and black tracksuit bottoms or leggings.

Please also ensure that your child has spare clothing in their bags in case of any toilet accidents. These should be kept in school on your child’s coat peg.

Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic regulations, we are not asking parents to send in cooking tubs this term. The children will take part in cooking/ food preparation activities within class at different points throughout the topic and food will be consumed in class at our daily snack session. Thank you for your understanding

Please read with your child at least three times a week and record this in their reading record. Children should be encouraged to use their phonic knowledge to segment and blend words when reading new words for the first time.
Please also encourage your child to use Reading Eggs to support their reading skills. We would recommend this is done on a weekly basis.

Occasionally new topic-related challenges or tasks may be set based upon the children's activities in class. These will be shared with parents and carers via letter and on Tapestry.
