Badgers

Welcome to Badgers Class! We are really pleased to welcome all our new children and their families to our school and into Badgers Class. Your class teachers are Mrs Houston (Monday- Wednesday) and Mrs Stevens (Thursday – Friday). Your other class staff are Mrs Felstead and Miss Norman (Monday – Friday) and Mrs Barnard (Tuesday, Thursday, Friday).

Our Spring term topic is called Dinosaurs.

In the first few weeks of the Spring term we will learn about explorers and how the work that explorers do helps us to learn more about the world. We will learn about places in the world that are even colder than the UK and find out what life is like there. We will use the history of the explorer Ernest Shackleton and the journeys he made to help us get ready to go on our own winter expeditions!

Following the half-term holiday, we have an 'International Week' which will focus on learning about Italy.  We will find out about the similarities and differences between Italy and the UK, including schools, homes, weather, food and music as well as exploring the famous landmarks of Italy.

For the rest of the Spring term we will learn about dinosaurs. We are going to find out how much time has passed since dinosaurs were alive on Earth and learn how scientists find out about dinosaurs today using fossils. We are going to read a range of exciting texts, including non-fiction books, poems and stories such as Ten Terrible Dinosaurs to help ignite our excitement and curiosity. We will write our own questions and learn how we might find out the answers. We will also learn about a lady called Mary Anning who played a very important role in dinosaur research.

You will receive a topic web, which will show you in more detail the learning your child will be covering. Please check Tapestry regularly to see what your child has been up to in class and leave a comment if you would like to. We would love to see photos, comments and entries from you too, to share what you have been up to at home.

We look forward to a busy, happy and productive term. If you have any questions, queries or worries please don’t hesitate to speak to a member of our staff team either in person at the door, through Tapestry or via a phone call or email to the school office.

PE

Our PE days in Reception are Monday and Wednesday. We ask that your child attend school in their PE kit and warmly dressed on these days, so they will be ready for their PE lesson.

COOKING

Our cooking day will usually be on a Tuesday, however we often cook in class and enjoy trying our food together on the carpet. If we have food to send home, we will notify you by text beforehand, so you can send in a container if you would like to.

HOMEWORK

Please read or share a book with your child at least three times a week and note this in their Reading Record. Please help your child to listen out for sounds they recognise from their daily phonics session in class in words. More information about our phonics session will be sent home soon.

Later in the term your child will receive a Reading Eggs website login and password. Please support your child to complete the activities on Reading Eggs on a weekly basis.

Occasionally we may set simple topic-related challenges based on the children’s learning in class. If so we will share these challenges with you via letter and on Tapestry.
