U16 Boys Rugby v. Wymondham College B – State Schools Cup Round 1
The U16 boys rugby team travelled to Wymondham College to play in the first round of the State Schools Cup.
Against a side with much more experience than our lads, Hellesdon applied themselves superbly throughout the game and played their part in a fiercely contested match.
It was Wymondham College though who scored an early try after a handling mistake by Hellesdon just inside their own 22. However, the boot of Oli D put Hellesdon within touching distance at half time with a cleanly struck penalty to leave the score 5-3 to Wymondham College.
Hellesdon started strongly in the second half and were unfortunate at times not to get over their opponent’s try line. Oli D doubled his penalty tally to edge Hellesdon in front 6-5 with around 20 minutes remaining. Towards the latter stages Wymondham upped their game with Hellesdon’s own try line being under threat several times. Just though when it looked as though Hellesdon might hold on for a memorable win, Wymondham forced the ball over the line with less than a minute left to run out 12-6 winners.
A great effort all-round by the boys in a game played with sportsmanship shown by both sides. Hellesdon now move into the Plate competition where they will face-off against Alderman Peel in a ‘Wensum Trust’ derby!
