Growing Together: Transforming the EAL Garden at Hellesdon High School

Hellesdon High School is proud to be creating a new EAL Garden, a dedicated space designed to support students who are new to learning English.
This exciting initiative will provide opportunities for students to grow fruit, vegetables, and herbs; produce they can either take home or donate to the local food bank, fostering both independence and community connection.
To highlight the scale of the transformation, we have included a ‘before’ photograph of the area, showcasing the starting point for what is set to become a vibrant and welcoming space.
The project got off to a fantastic start over the Easter break, when Mrs Nickerson and Miss Kemp, supported by their families and a group of enthusiastic sixth form students, began transforming the garden space. Their efforts included clearing the site and transporting and laying an impressive two tonnes of shingle. In a memorable moment, Mrs Nickerson even drove a farm truck and trailer through the city to deliver essential supplies.
At the same time, Miss Kemp and the sixth form team turned their attention to the raised beds near K Block, carefully weeding and preparing them for future sensory planting, which will further enhance the garden’s inclusive and therapeutic environment.
The EAL Garden is already gaining recognition, with the school proudly entering the Royal Norfolk Show School Garden Competition. Further updates will follow as the project continues to grow.
Looking ahead, the next phase will involve organising the delivery of topsoil and completing the finishing touches before the launch of the EAL Gardening Club, scheduled to begin on the second Thursday after half term.
This project would not have been possible without the generosity and dedication of our volunteers. Their hard work is helping to create a vibrant, supportive space that will bring lasting benefits, and a little sunshine, to our EAL students.
