Star of the Show: Wensum Trust teacher shortlisted for film award

It was lights, camera, action, when a teacher from a Wensum Trust school was nominated for a prestigious, national film award.
Ash Williams, who is Maths, Science, and Computing Lead at Burnham Market Primary, has been shortlisted for Filmmaking Champion at this year’s Into Film Awards for his work in providing film-making experiences for young people at the school and within the wider community.
His work last year saw Burnham Market win Best Film for SI Superficial Intelligence, while the pupils’ latest film project, SpaceBop, is due to premiere at Fakenham Cinema on 7 July.
“It’s pretty amazing,” said Mr Williams of his nomination. “I’ve worked hard to promote film education and the appreciation of film making in my school and in this part of Norfolk, and it feels fantastic to be recognised in such a way.
“I’ve been teaching film and supporting young film makers for 16 years now, so it feels fantastic to have such an accolade.”
Mr Williams is one of only three people shortlisted for the award, which will be presented at the Into Film Awards ceremony at the Odeon in London’s Leicester Square in June.
“I was nominated for a similar award in 2022, so to be nominated again feels incredible,” continued Mr Williams. “This is the only award for educators and those that support film making.
“The winner is decided by a panel of judges, including industry professionals and educators. It’ll be a red carpet event with hundreds of people and many film celebrities.”
“Film making is my absolute passion, and being able to bring the fantastic opportunities making a movie can provide into the classroom has always been something I’ve been incredibly passionate about,” he added.
“In the time I’ve been at Burnham Market, I’ve supported the production of dozens of films, which have won multiple awards; supported local charities with film production; and even acted as the Film Festival Director for the Fakenham Film Festival.
“Much of what I’ve done has been about inspiring others to achieve, so being recognised for supporting and furthering the love of film and film making feels truly special.”
