Animal magic as Wensum Trust schools celebrate Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday

Happy Birthday Sir David Attenborough!
Pupils at two Wensum Trust schools in Hellesdon marked Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday with animal-themed celebrations inspired by the world-renowned naturalist and broadcaster.
Children at both Kinsale Junior School and Arden Grove Infant School and Nursery arrived on Friday 8 May dressed as their favourite animals, wearing animal-themed clothing, or carrying cuddly creatures as part of the special occasion.
At Kinsale Junior School, Sir David Attenborough has also been chosen as one of the school’s four houses, alongside Mary Anning, Jane Goodall, and Charles Darwin, reflecting the school’s status as a ‘Zoo School’ in partnership with the Zoological Society of East Anglia (ZSEA).
“We held a special celebration to mark the 100th birthday of David Attenborough,” said Head of School Jo Philpott.
“Sir David Attenborough was chosen as one of our House names due to his contributions to the world of natural history and evolutionary science, which links perfectly to our Zoo School ethos of conservation, ecology, and sustainability.”
Pupils at Kinsale took part in a range of nature-themed activities inspired by Sir David Attenborough’s lifelong work, including wildlife and nature photography, with children invited to submit their own photographs of local wildlife and the natural world. Drone photography also captured the pupils forming the shape of the number ‘100’ on the playground.
The school also welcomed Sara Goatcher from ZSEA to lead a special assembly, joined by Year 2 pupils from Kinsale Infant School.
Meanwhile, at Arden Grove Infant School and Nursery, pupils enjoyed themed learning activities throughout the day, alongside a visit from Ewan at Animal Hut, who introduced the children to a range of animals including snakes, a tarantula, insects, and a rat.
“We found out more about David Attenborough and his life, and enjoyed watching some of his amazing documentaries,” said teacher Georgia Groom.
“Year 1 and Year 2 learnt about being conservationists and some of the threats that face some of our most beloved animals, walking in the footsteps of David Attenborough.”
Arden Grove pupils also joined schools from across the UK for a live national assembly celebrating Sir David Attenborough’s life and achievements.
“In Key Stage 1 we joined a live national assembly to find out more about David Attenborough, and listened to the mystery guest, Steve Backshall, who talked about how inspirational David Attenborough has been to him,” added Mrs Groom.
“Sir David Attenborough has inspired generations with his love for the natural world, and we wanted to honour his incredible legacy with a day full of fun and educational activities,” added Mrs Philpott.
“We really enjoyed seeing the children’s creative outfits, and celebrating this historic milestone together.”
