Firside teacher raises more than £1,700 at London Marathon
Break times at Firside Junior School have received a creative makeover, after a teacher ran a marathon to raise more than £1,700 for new outdoor play equipment.
James Adams successfully completed the London Marathon in just over five-and-a-half five hours to fundraise for the school in Hellesdon, where he is Head of Year 5.
“Running the 2026 London Marathon was an experience I’ll never forget,” he said. “From start to finish, the atmosphere was incredible – the crowds lining the streets were loud, supportive, and completely uplifting, carrying me through even the toughest moments.
“Although my finishing time of five hours and 34 minutes was slower than I had hoped for, it didn’t take away from what an amazing and memorable day it was, and that I ran it with a smile on my face.
“It felt like a real privilege to take part, especially knowing I was running to raise money for Firside Junior School. Being able to contribute in that way made all the training and the marathon itself worth it. I hope that in some small way, it inspires the children to challenge themselves and aim high in whatever they do.”
The money will be used to improve the outdoor play provision at Firside, which is a member of the Wensum Trust, and has just become part of the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) Scheme.
“Through OPAL, we are rethinking how playtimes look and feel,” explained Assistant Head of School Lucy Seagrave. “Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach, we aim to create a rich, engaging, outdoor environment, where every child can find something meaningful to do.
“This might include imaginative play, den building, creative construction, quiet reflection, physical challenges, or cooperative games. Children will be encouraged to take appropriate risks, solve problems, and develop independence in a safe and supportive setting.”
Firside pupils supported Mr Adams every step of the way, joining in fundraising activities, and following his progress at the London Marathon.
“We are all immensely proud of Mr Adams and his marathon achievement,” added Mrs Seagrave. “When he said that he wanted to support our Friends of Firside, we were so overwhelmed that he chose them, and he has worked hard to fundraise through non-uniform days, movie nights, competitions, and his Gofundme page.
“It has been wonderful to see the children supporting him. So many families were tracking him throughout the race, and watched live as he crossed the finish line – and it was great to see him back in school with his medal.”
