Hellesdon High School is proud to announce that we have been awarded School of Sanctuary status for the next three years.
This accreditation recognises our ongoing commitment to creating a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all students, especially those seeking sanctuary.
The feedback from School of Sanctuary highlighted the strength of our work across the LEARN, EMBED, SHARE and co-production processes, noting that our “dedication shines through in so many areas.”
Building Awareness: LEARN
Our staff have engaged deeply with specialist training, including Healing Classrooms, Refugee Education UK, and trauma/attachment-informed coaching. Sanctuary themes are integrated across English, Geography, History and PSHE, helping students build empathy, understanding, and global awareness.
Taking Positive Action: EMBED
Over the past three years we have introduced a number of initiatives that support sanctuary-seeking students:
-
The PAWS induction programme for new arrivals
-
The library’s development as a Safe Space
-
Recruitment of International Buddies
-
Celebrations during Refugee Week and participation in events such as welcome meetings and International Picnics
Pupil Voice and Leadership
Student leadership plays a crucial role in our sanctuary culture. The International Club, the “Languages of Hellesdon” project, pastoral surveys, and collaboration with Muslim students to establish a new prayer space and Buddy System all ensure that student voice remains central.
Sharing Our Vision
We continue to share our learning and practice widely through our School of Sanctuary webpage, newsletters, and social media. We are also active contributors to broader networks, including Norfolk Schools of Sanctuary and “A Day of Welcome.”
Co-production With Sanctuary-Seeking Students
We are especially proud of the way sanctuary-seeking students help shape our provision. Their contributions through surveys, collaboration on prayer space design, and sharing personal journeys during Refugee Week really enhance the entire school community.
We are delighted to receive accreditation and we are fully committed to being a place of safety, welcome, and belonging for all.
