Y11 Pathway Cup Final: Hellesdon 0-2 Sprowston

After some last minute injuries / late call-offs the Y11 boys football team made the short trip to The Nest to play against their old nemeses, Sprowston, in the Y11 Pathway Cup Final.

For the third game in a row, Hellesdon had to contend with having no subs which would again prove challenging particularly against such opponents.

In very windy conditions, the game started fairly evenly but it was Sprowston who took the lead midway through the first half due to a freak own goal which somehow ended up in the back of the Hellesdon net. Sprowston soon added a second and went in at half time 2-0 up.

Hellesdon though started the second half positively and began creating chances of their own. Both Freddie P and Charlie W worked tirelessly to try and get Hellesdon a foothold back in the game but to no avail as the wind continued to make things difficult. Sprowston looked threatening themselves but the backline of Hadlee L-N, Rhys B, Tom B and Noah S did their best to keep them at bay. Josh F, stepping up at the last minute to replace the injured Jack T, also performed admirably in goal and so too did Toby S, who like Josh was playing up a year and did not look out of place at all. Doug C and Cam B ran their socks off in midfield on a day where having no subs really took its toll in the latter stages.

Hellesdon pushed hard right to the very end but through a combination of fine saves from the Sprowston keeper and a few missed opportunities by Hellesdon, Sprowston were able to see the game out to be crowned Pathway Cup winners.

The game also marked the end of an era for most of the boys involved who have represented the school football team for the past five years. Despite falling just short again, a record of making two County Cup finals and two Pathway Cup finals together with a strong run in the Y9 National Cup is something the boys should all be incredibly proud of. They have literally travelled the breadth of the county, from Kings Lynn to Gorleston and even out of county to Colchester, registering a very commendable win percentage of around 70% along the way. Even more impressive is how the boys have conducted themselves, on the most part, whilst representing their school and always showing great humour during the lengthy minibus trips.
