Students head back to the 80s for school show
There’s nothing Too Shy about students who are working on being True to their musical ambition with a show that has more than a hint of the 80s about it.
The Wedding Singer tells the story of Robbie Hart who falls for waitress Julia and promises to sing at her marriage. The two plan on spending their lives with other people, but fate has other ideas.
Fast forward more than 40 years from the film’s setting, and students at Hellesdon High School are putting the finishing touches to their stage musical version which will be presented later this month.
With more than 60 students involved in the production, ranging in ages from Years 7 to 13, there’s plenty going on with the show.
“Some students have been giving up six hours a week plus rehearsing for the show at home, but the life skills and experience they gain is invaluable and will be remembered forever. I still remember my school shows!” said Head of Music Lara Leuw-Gardner.
She added that rehearsals started in September but work on behind the scenes planning started as far back as last June.
Describing the show as ‘fun’ Mrs LG said The Wedding Singer was chosen because the school hadn’t presented an 80s production for some time.
“Regarding casting, we had well-suited students to roles this year,” she added.
The 1998 film starred Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore and was a popular hit of its time, packed full of contemporary tunes from the 80s ranging from Kajagoogoo to Spandau Ballet and Dead or Alive.
The students have been perfecting their roles and tickets are on sale for the show which runs on January 28, 29 and 30 and booking details can be found on the school website here.
