English

In English this week we have continued to explore the text The Odd Egg by Emily Gravett. Year 1 children have been focussing on how the characters might feel in the story. We have been pretending to be the different birds and acting out their thoughts and feelings. We used this information to write our own diary entry pretending to be duck. We have also been asking lots of questions so we have learned about writing the questions words who, what, why, when, where and how to use a question mark? Year 2 have been learning about the suffix -est which means the most.

We have also been learning about how to use an apostrophe to show possession. Here is a link you may find useful… https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/z4cqkty

After lots of talk about eggs the children will be learning how to write a fact file about an egg using notes and will be doing some independent writing to create their own egg fact file.

Maths

Year 1

This week we have been learning to count in 5s. We watched the scratch garden counting in 5s song and used numicon and cube towers to count in 5s. We also played a game called “Huggies” The children had to walk around the room and then get into groups and “high five” each other. Then we counted in 5s to see how many “high fives” were in the group.

Now that we are confident to count in 2s, 5s and 10s we have learned about money. We have investigated and compared 1p, 2p, 5p and 10p coins so that we can recognise and name them. Then we learned about the values of the coins so we coils say that ten 1p coins was the same values and one 10p coin. We have played shopping to match totals and made totals using coins.

AT HOME

How many 1ps would you need to buy this? Could you pay using 2ps? 5ps? 10p?

Try these

You could also talk about the best way to pay. For example - would it be best to use 1ps to pay for these or would 10ps be better? (At this point in year 1 we use coins of the same value, not mixing 1p, 2p. 5p and 10p together)

Year 2

This week has been all about division. Children have been learning how to divide by grouping and by sharing.

Division by grouping

This example shows 18 grouped into 3s (18 divided by 3). To find the answer, we count how many groups there are - 6.

Division by sharing

In this example, we can see how 18 has been shared between 3 (18 divided by 3). To find the answer, we count how many are in each group - 6.

Both strategies give us the same answer but some children find one method easier than the other. We also teach children how to skip count to find the answer. For example- 18 divided by 3 - we count in 3s until we get to 18. 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18- we have counted 6 times.

D&T Project - Taxi!

This week the children will be following their designs to make and then evaluate their own taxi. Their taxi must meet a set criteria and have either a fixed or moving axle, be able to move along when pushed and have a strong chassis.

Children will be bringing their taxis home when they are finished.

We finish for half term this Friday 14th February at the usual time of 3pm and return to school on Monday 24th February.  Have a lovely half term!
