Phonics
Year 1
This week we have continued to recap the split digraph sounds. The children have been getting really confident to recognise these digraphs in words so we have been reading a range of real and nonsense words that contain all the different digraphs. We have also really focussed on reading and spelling the tricky words. Here is a link to an online tricky word reading game we like to play.

This week we have been recapping the difference between fiction and nonfiction. We shared everything we knew about bears and sorted this into fact and fiction. The children will be learning lots of new facts about brown bears and creating their own fact files independently at the end of the week. As part of your home learning you could have a look at some information together about brown bears…

Maths
Year 1
This week we have been learning to count in 5s. We watched the scratch garden counting in 5s song and used numicon and cube towers to count in 5s. We also played a game called “Huggies” The children had to walk around the room and then get into groups and “high five” each other. Then we counted in 5s to see how many “high fives” were in the group.
Now that we are confident to count in 2s, 5s and 10s we have learned about money. We have investigated and compared 1p, 2p, 5p and 10p coins so that we can recognise and name them. Then we learned about the values of the coins so we coils say that ten 1p coins was the same values and one 10p coin. We have played shopping to match totals and made totals using coins.
AT HOME
How many 1ps would you need to buy this? Could you pay using 2ps? 5ps? 10p?
Try these
You could also talk about the best way to pay. For example - would it be best to use 1ps to pay for these or would 10ps be better? (At this point in year 1 we use coins of the same value, not mixing 1p, 2p. 5p and 10p together)
Year 2
This week we are looking at division. We started the week by looking at division by grouping and then move on to division by sharing. Below are an example of each…
We have learnt that division is in inverse (opposite) of multiplication and that we can use our knowledge of counting in 2s, 5s and 10s to help us solve problems. For example- 10 divided into groups of 2, we can skip count in 2s until we get to 10, 2-4-6-8-10. We have counted 5 lots of 2. So 10 divided into groups of 2 = 5.
At home you can have a go at sharing amounts of sweets into different amounts- can they be shared/divided equally? Or you could have a go at… https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/daily10

ScienceProject - Uses of Materials
Our new project is about uses of materials. We will be talking about common everyday materials and looking at what our classroom items are made of. We will then be exploring the properties of different materials and what makes them suitable for purpose. After this we’ll be carrying out some simple experiments, making predictions and testing a range of materials.
We finish for half term this Friday 16th February at the usual time of 3pm and return to school on Monday 26th February.
Have a lovely half term!
