Battlefields Trip – Day 1 Highlights

Yesterday our Year 9/10 Battlefields group experienced a truly memorable and meaningful day exploring key First World War sites. Pupils visited Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery and the Bayernwald Trench System, where they learnt about the development of trench warfare and the many challenges faced by soldiers on the Western Front.
The group then visited Hooge Crater Cemetery to pay their respects at the grave of a relative of one of our pupils - an especially moving and personal moment for everyone involved.
In the afternoon, pupils enjoyed time in the historic city of Ypres, including a visit to the famous chocolate shop (and the enthusiastic spending of many euros on sweet treats!).
We finished the day at the Menin Gate, taking part in the Last Post ceremony. It was a powerful experience, made even more special as four of our pupils had the honour of laying a wreath in commemoration.

An action-packed, reflective, and enjoyable start to the trip - well done to all involved.
