30 JanBattlefields Trip – Day 2 Update Day two was another action-packed day as we travelled to France to visit key sites of the Western Front. We journeyed to the Somme, where we explored locations connected to the largest battle in British military history. Highlights included Sunken Lane, where we examined a front-line attack and students listened to a recording from a soldier who survived the assault there. We then visited the Newfoundland Memorial Park, where students saw authentically preserved trenches and learnt about the significant Canadian contributions to the First World War. Students were amazed at Lochnagar Crater, created by an underground mine explosion in 1916 prior to the attack on the Somme. At the time, it was the largest man-made explosion in the world before the development of the atomic bomb, and students were blown away by the sheer size of the crater. Our final visit was to the Thiepval Memorial, the largest British and Commonwealth war memorial in the world. It bears the names of over 72,000 British soldiers who went missing after the Battle of the Somme and never received a formal burial. We heard moving stories of individuals commemorated on this memorial. It was a powerful and informative day, and we are very much looking forward to our final day on Friday before returning to Acle. #acleacademy #lestweforget
30 JanBattlefields Tour – Day 1 Highlights Yesterday our Year 9/10 Battlefields group experienced a truly memorable and meaningful day exploring key First World War sites. Pupils visited Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery and the Bayernwald Trench System, where they learnt about the development of trench warfare and the many challenges faced by soldiers on the Western Front. The group then visited Hooge Crater Cemetery to pay their respects at the grave of a relative of one of our pupils - an especially moving and personal moment for everyone involved. In the afternoon, pupils enjoyed time in the historic city of Ypres, including a visit to the famous chocolate shop (and the enthusiastic spending of many euros on sweet treats!). We finished the day at the Menin Gate, taking part in the Last Post ceremony. It was a powerful experience, made even more special as four of our pupils had the honour of laying a wreath in commemoration. An action-packed, reflective, and enjoyable start to the trip - well done to all involved. #acleacademy
