Holocause Memorial Day
To mark Holocaust Memorial Day, this week Miss Evans will be delivering the assembly in line with this year's theme, 'For a Better Future'.
The assembly examines how we can 'learn', 'remember' and 'do' more to honour the memories of those who lost their lives and/or loved ones during the Holocaust, as well as those who stood up to the Nazis and resisted the persecution of the Jewish people. This year's Holocaust Memorial Day marks both the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau and the 30th anniversary of the Bosnian genocide. The assembly aims to highlight key events of both tragedies and reiterate the important role that individuals have in challenging discrimination and persecution where it is witnessed, to prevent the escalation of this to acts of violence like those the assembly is focused on. Moreover, we discuss with students the vital importance of being critical about content they come across on the internet/social media and aim to make them aware of worrying trends of Holocaust denial and distortion that are increasingly prevalent in online spaces, with a view to equipping students with the skills needed to access content from reputable sources and use social media responsibly.
