Olive and Jade Blog 22.1.24

This week...

We have been continuing with our project 'Starry Night' - We have listened to the story Katie and the Starry Night and then we learnt how to make colours lighter and darker by adding white or black paint, the children then had a go at painting a night sky using the different shades. We are also reading Old Bear and then looking at different materials. The children will decide what it the most suitable material to make a teddy bear out of that would be good to cuddle at night time.

In Phonics EYFS are doing long vowel sounds and magic e/split digraphs e.g. kite, bakeeve, cone, tune. The Year ones are doing ea as in the ee digraph e.g. leak. We are really focussing on the children being able to say the sounds to blend the sounds together and make a word using all the phonic skills they know but to help with making their writing more accurate we are working on them being able to segment a word into the sounds. We are also working on the curly caterpillar letters - c, o, a, g, d and making sure that we start the formation of these as a c.

We are also writing 2 dictated sentences a week as well as an additional one as part of phonics on a Friday where the children practise their independent writing skills. We will also be continuing with story scribes and acting them out too. The children are getting on well with the dictated sentences and we are supporting with this a little to really embed these early writing skills.

We are having our daily stories which Olive class are reading books about Dinosaurs and Jade class are reading books with a Space theme. One of these stories will be in the library and we are also doing everyone reading in class at the same time which gives the children the opportunity to sit and look at a book on their own or with a friend. They can look at the pictures, see if they can recognise any words or sounds or chat about the book they are looking out. This is to encourage reading for pleasure.

In Maths we are looking at the patterns that we can make with different amounts of blocks up to 5.

Within this we are looking again at the different pairs of numbers that make up that number from 1 - 5. We talk about this as the parts of a number that make a whole. E.g. 3 and 2 are parts of the whole of 5. 3 is the whole and 2 and 1 are parts of 3. The children will also be looking at repeating patterns and seeing if they can continue a pattern or make up their own patter for another child to complete. We will be learning how to tell the time to o' clock.

In RE the children will be continuing to look at how Chinese new year is celebrated and in RSHE the children will be discussing ways of overcoming a challenge. In Dots (mindfulness) the children have been practising breathing and noticing where they can feel their breath. We have done tummy and chest breathing, balloon breathing and teddy bear breathing which the children say helps them to fall asleep and relax. They will also be doing their weekly yoga session.

Please remember to send in your odd sock for the children to make sock puppets! Thank you!
